Minister of Foreign Affairs Receives Credentials of New UNICEF Representative for Pacific Island Countries

Port Vila, Vanuatu — Thursday 9 April 2026:

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and External Trade, Hon. Marc Ati, received the credentials of Mr. Hamish Young, the recently appointed Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) for Pacific Island Countries.

The presentation of credentials marked an important milestone in strengthening the long-standing partnership between the Government of Vanuatu and UNICEF. The meeting provided a valuable opportunity for both parties to exchange views on shared priorities and reaffirm their joint commitment to improving the lives and well-being of children across Vanuatu.

During the discussions, Minister Ati and Mr Young highlighted UNICEF’s multi-sectoral approach in Vanuatu, with a strong focus on education, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), health and nutrition, child protection, climate change adaptation, and emergency preparedness and response. UNICEF works closely with Vanuatu’s authorities, local communities, and partners, ensuring that programmes effectively reach children and families in remote and vulnerable areas.

Minister Ati expressed appreciation for the continued engagement and technical expertise in supporting national development priorities and building the resilience of communities.

“UNICEF has been a trusted and reliable partner to Vanuatu for many years. Its unwavering commitment to the welfare of our children and its rapid and effective response during times of crisis have made a significant difference to our people,” said Minister Ati. “The Government of Vanuatu deeply values this partnership and looks forward to further enhancing our cooperation in the years ahead.”

Mr Young reaffirmed UNICEF’s commitment to working in close partnership with the Government and people of Vanuatu.

“It is a privilege to serve as the UNICEF Representative to Vanuatu and to continue building on the strong partnership between the Government of Vanuatu, its people and UNICEF,” said Mr Young. “We remain fully committed to supporting national efforts to protect and empower children and women, including through strengthening essential services, promoting climate resilience, and ensuring that the most vulnerable communities are not left behind.”

UNICEF is currently working closely with the Government of Vanuatu to support emergency response efforts following the recent magnitude 7.2 earthquake in Santo, as well as addressing the ongoing situation in Ambae related to volcanic activity. In addition, UNICEF continues to support recovery and preparedness initiatives stemming from previous disasters, reinforcing national systems and community resilience.

The Government of Vanuatu and UNICEF will continue to collaborate closely across ministries and with development partners to deliver sustainable and inclusive programmes that address the evolving needs of children and young people throughout the country.
